What Does Termite Damage Look Like?

We’ve been talking quite a bit about termites lately and that’s because these small insects can create big problems.  In fact, the longer a termite problem goes untreated, the more extensive the damage is likely to be.   Termite damage is a serious matter and one that homeowners in Middle TN should be aware of and know what to look for.

What termite damage looks likeUnfortunately termites are elusive by nature and tend to do the most destructive work in secret.  They actually consume wood from the inside out so what may look like sound, solid wood is actually hollow and could lead to serious issues.  So what does termite damage look like?  Termite damage occurs along the grain of the wood as these destructive pests follow the grain as they feed.  Termite damaged wood also is filled with moist soil and covered with muddy material but again you can’t necessarily see it.  You must rely in part on your ears.  Tap walls, floors and other wood sources in the home listening for a hollow-sound.   That could be an indication of a termite infestation and if broken open, you are likely to see the items we just mentioned.  Other evidence of termite damages includes sagging floors and bulging walls.

Visible termite damage means that an active colony is on your property or nearby and already infesting your home, which means it’s too late to prevent the problem.  The key to preventing significant termite damage is early detection.  Though they are elusive in nature, termites do leave signs of their presence. In order to avoid having your home serve as a buffet to foraging termites, you should also know what to look for prior to damage occurring.  Signs of a termite problem include:

  •  Swarming termites
  • Mud tubes leading into foundation cracks and around door and window frames
  • Light-colored insects that move will move rapidly to avoid exposure to light
